A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Beitbridge for killing two sisters and burning their corpses at their rented house in the Vhembe-view suburb two weeks ago.

According to Police officer commanding Beitbridge District (Dispol), Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo, the victims, Everjoy and Sandra Chapasuka, aged 30 and 20, were murdered on March 8, and the motive behind the killings is still unknown.

The suspect, Philani Mukothamo, has been charged with two counts of murder and is expected to appear in court pending further investigations.

Chief Supt Nyongo stated that the case was initially treated as a house fire, but further investigations led them to suspect murder.

According to the police officer, Mukothamo was married to Everjoy, and Sandra had visited them to seek employment in Beitbridge. On March 7, at around 8 pm, Mukothamo left the two women at home and went to Mashavire Business Centre, and on the following morning around 12:45 am, a neighbor heard an explosion sound and investigated.

The police were alerted about the fire incident, and the Beitbridge Fire Brigade responded, putting out the fire.

The two women’s remains were found burnt beyond recognition in a corner of the room, and forensic experts were called in to ascertain the cause of the fire.
