Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned South African President Cyril Ramaphosa that any country supplying weapons to Russia would face consequences and become an accomplice.

The warning came during a phone call initiated by Ramaphosa himself.

Zelensky had also asked Ramaphosa to support his “peace formula” for ending the war with Ukraine but did not disclose his response.

The warning was in response to the accusation made by US ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, last week that South Africa had loaded weapons and ammunition for Russia on to a Russian cargo ship at Simon’s Town Naval Base in December 2022.

Brigety’s remarks caused a diplomatic storm and he was “démarched” by International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor.
