President of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has assured that before the expiration of his tenure, the Video Assistant Referee, VAR, will be introduced in the country.

Speaking at a Football stakeholders meeting in Abuja for FIFA talent development scheme, the NFF president disclosed that plans are underway to send some referees to Morocco for training on the use of VAR.

He revealed that the football body will liase with the Moroccan football authority on the need to send officials to learn more on the use of the technology.

“I want to assure you that we will see how we are going to use VAR in Nigeria because by January we are going to send the first set of referees that will go for training of VAR.

“WAFU are trying to organise the training but at our own level, we are pleading with them to increase the numbers that will participate at the training so that we will have a minimum of 10 referees that will go there.

“Once they are done, we will try to see how to send them to learn more of VAR on the pitch so that they will stay for two or three weeks which the Moroccan football authority are ready to support us.

“I want to assure you that within the nearest future, we are going to see how we can start using VAR. I assure you that before my tenure ends in 2026, we will start using VAR in Nigeria.”
