Following the superb performance of the Banyana Banayana at the 2023 World Cup, the government of South Africa has concluded arrangement to establish a professional women’s football league in the country.

South Africa is one of the powerhouses in women’s football on the continent but doesn’t have professional football.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa made the confirmation on Sunday after the ouster of Banyana Banyana from the World Cup.

“Banyana Banyana’s efforts in the FIFA Women’s World Cup mean so much for the country. Also, emphasise once again the importance of supporting women’s sports and sports development at the grassroots level.

Our immediate task in working with relevant stakeholders is the establishment of a professional women’s league.

“I expect that Banyana Banyana’s success will not be in vain”, he said.
